With public outreach and education as the foundation of their work, the Communications Department is focused on developing and implementing strategic communication and marketing plans to support a variety of projects in accordance with state and federal public participation requirements. Through close collaboration and coordination with internal project managers, outside stakeholders, and member agencies, the team provides professional expertise for all public involvement and outreach, marketing, promotions, publicity, and media efforts to build awareness and gain support for the agency’s programs and projects including regional highway, transit, and active transportation system investments, the design and implementation of capital projects, long-range regional planning, environmental management, toll road operations and traffic-reduction initiatives, and inter-governmental coordination.

The Public Information Office responds to general inquiries regarding SANDAG programs, projects, and services, and is dedicated to providing timely and relevant information to the public, elected officials, community groups, and the news media.

Each week, the Public Information Officer (PIO) receives and responds to dozens of requests for information about SANDAG programs and activities via phone, email, social media, and in person. This position assists with developing news stories for mass media, participates in public outreach and marketing efforts, contributes to a variety of internal and external publications, and assists in developing and implementing communication strategies to educate the public about SANDAG initiatives.

The minimum education, training, and experience qualifications include a bachelor’s degree with major coursework in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field, and one to four years of recent experience supporting public information and news media liaison functions, preferably for an organization comparable in size and complexity to SANDAG.
