The San Diego County Water Authority is seeking a Public Affairs Representative I to work in our Public Outreach and Conservation Department. The Public Affairs Representative I will be expected to write a variety of outreach materials, including news releases, video and audio scripts, fact sheets and web copy. The successful candidate also will be responsible for initiating and producing videos for the Water Authority’s Water News Network, the Water Authority’s main website, and other projects. This is a non-exempt position. The successful candidate also will provide support for outreach events, including some that require work on evenings and weekends.
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Writing and coordinating production of news releases, brochures, fact sheets and other outreach materials.
- Writing and producing news stories and other content for the Water News Network.
- Producing short videos for the Water News Network, social media, websites and other platforms.
- Using PowerPoint to develop presentations about Water Authority issues and programs.
- Coordinating special events, news conferences and other events.
- Representing the Water Authority at special events, groups and in other venues.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, especially the ability to write clearly, quickly and creatively in compliance with AP style. Experience producing simple videos is also highly desirable. Employment in a newsroom or as an in-house media relations representative would be good preparation for this position. Besides strong written and verbal communication skills, applicants should possess creativity, curiosity, enthusiasm, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in a high-performance organization, the ability to handle high-pressure situations, a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances, and the capacity to produce high-quality outreach materials while managing multiple deadlines. The Public Affairs Representative is part of a team of outreach and conservation staff that are expected to exhibit versatile communications skills supporting a variety of outreach efforts across the agency.
A typical example of qualifying education and experience would be graduation from a college or university with major coursework in public relations, public affairs, journalism, communications, public administration or a closely related field and two years of progressively responsible professional experience in one or more of the public affairs specialty areas of government, community relations and CIP outreach, media relations, web site management, and graphic services similar to those administered by the Water Authority. Strong communication skills, including the ability to write clearly, quickly and creative in compliance with AP style is required. Experience producing simple videos or online content is highly desirable. Previous employment in a newsroom or as an in-house media relations representative is highly desirable.
