Chapter Honors 2018 Edward L. Bernays Award Winners

Close to 200 public relations professionals attended the 26th annual Edward L. Bernays Mark of Excellence Awards ceremony on October 25, hosted by the San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA SD/IC). At the “Mad for PR” themed banquet, attendees were welcomed with a cocktail reception at the old-fashioned style Helvetica Bar at The Alexandria at Torrey Pines. Attendees then enjoyed a 90-minute awards program in the state-of-the-art Illumina Theater, during which more than 70 winners were announced and presented with Silver and Bronze Bernays Awards. The program was led by San Diego’s very own, Emmy-winning television news reporter and Director of Storytelling for NBC 7 San Diego, Joe Little.

“The Bernays Awards is the Chapter’s largest annual event, bringing together hundreds of public relations professionals to recognize the amazing campaigns and tactics planned and executed by San Diego and Imperial County professionals over the past year,” said Jenny Corsey, president of the PRSA SD/IC Chapter.” As communication pros, we spend most of our time highlighting our clients and executives. The Bernays Awards are a unique opportunity for our fellow professionals to be recognized for all of their contributions and tremendous efforts.”

Named after Edward L. Bernays, the “father of public relations,” the awards were open to all agencies and organizations in San Diego and Imperial counties. They recognize excellence in public relations campaigns and tactics in a range of categories including media relations, community relations and public affairs.

The Bernays Awards are divided into two categories—Silver, honoring entire public relations campaigns, and Bronze, honoring PR tactics. Silver Bernays assessments included research, planning, execution and evaluation of a campaign or program. Bronze Bernays recognized outstanding public relations tactics, consisting of individual items or components of programs or campaigns. Members of the West Michigan PRSA Chapter judged all award entries.

Mixte Communications took home the most awards with 15 Bernays, including seven Silver, six Bronze and two Best of Show Bernays Awards. Allison+Partners took home 12 Bernays, including three Silver, eight Bronze and one Best of Show Bernays Awards.

Five special awards were also presented to individuals and teams who made exemplary contributions to the public relations community and broader San Diego region.

The special awards included New Pro of the Year, Jeanna Vazquez, Marketing and Communications Specialist at Sharp HealthCare; Eva Irving Community Service Award, Joice Truban Curry, President & CEO of c3 Communications, Inc.; Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award, Elizabeth A. Pecsi APR, Fellow PRSA, Director of Communications at the San Diego Humane Society; Deborah Baker PR Professional of the Year, Elizabeth Hansen, Executive Vice President at Southwest Strategies; and PR Team of the Year, Crowe PR.

In one of the most highlighted moments of the night, Elizabeth Pecsi of the San Diego Humane Society was surprised with being awarded the Otto Bos Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes an experienced practitioner for lifetime achievement in the public relations arena. Nominated by her peers, Pesci’s career in public relations was celebrated, particularly her tremendous contributions through her role at the Humane Society. Just a few months into her role, the Humane Society confronted its worst case of animal hoarding in its 138-year history. The immediate needs were two-fold: helping to raise funds to care for these animals and provide for their medical rehabilitation; and manage the onslaught of offers to adopt these neglected animals. Pesci marshaled a combination of earned media and social media, especially strategic paid boosts via the Society’s Facebook page, enabling the agency to raise enough money to cover the care of these dogs, and all were eventually adopted in a well-planned process. This is just one example of her incredible ability to move mountains and achieve improbable outcomes. For this and her numerous other accomplishments, PRSA SD/IC is proud to award her with this lifetime achievement.

The event ended with the Best of Show Award winners, recognizing the highest scores among the Silver and Bronze categories. Silver Best of Show Awards were given to the Mixte Communications & CCAEJ (Public Affairs category) and Allison+Partners and Kampgrounds of America (Marketing – Consumer Products & Services category) – who tied for highest scoring entry. A Bronze Best of Show Award was given to Mixte Communications and Business for Good San Diego (Newsletters category).
